This July, Circus Now rallied the American circus community to Montreal for a series of special events at Montreal Completement Cirque, the biggest, baddest circus festival in North America. CN @ MCC featured 5 days of shows, shindigs, talks, and tours, with the aim of giving American circus practitioners, professionals, and fans an inside look at the circus culture in Montreal, a world capital for the art.
Highlights of the event included:
- Guided backstage tours of the city’s biggest circus installations including the National Circus School, Cirque du Soleil International Headquarters, and the Tohu, North America’s only purpose-built circus building
- A round-table discussion with local circus artists and thinkers, including ENC graduates and the Montreal Working Group on Circus
- A special “circus-style” walking tour of Montreal’s beautiful neighborhoods
- Networking events for circus professionals
- Parties for all
35 people traveled to CN@MCC from across the continent—from Washington, California, Illinois, Georgia, Pennsylvania, New York, and Toronto. The responses were enthusiastic:
“Circus Now Team – Thank you so much for making our Completement Cirque in Montreal so special. The 5 days of events were fantastic. I really enjoyed hanging out and seeing shows with, what I coined, “my circus posse”. The folder was well put together and invaluable, the tours were fun, plus the T-shirt – score!! I hope you will do it all again next year.” — Holly Newstead
“A million thank yous to Circus Now for putting it all together! We started coming to Montreal for the Circus Festival four years ago, and this was the best year yet because of the great schedule Circus Now created!” — Bones Newstead
“Thank you for coordinating. We enjoyed the festival, the tours, and loved staying at the Cirque du Soleil residence.” — Paula Vogt
The festival organizers also expressed enthusiasm about the new flush of American interest and future collaborations.
We on the CN team would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to everyone who helped make CN@MCC a success, from our volunteers to the coordinators at Montreal Completement Cirque.
And we’d especially like to thank everyone who attended. You made the event possible! We had a blast in Montreal, and hope to see you all there again next year.
