D’AIR is a 501c3 non-profit organization with a mission to enrich the community by creating and presenting artistically innovative works of aerial dance theatre and to foster positive youth development through movement arts education. Located in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia, D’AIR was established in the fall of 2007. D’AIR’s vision is to be a model program for youth empowerment, community development and creative expression through aerial dance and movement arts. Although intrinsically entwined, our organization focuses on two major components: PERFORMANCE and EDUCATION.
PERFORMANCE: D’AIR Aerial Dance Theatre
The creative powerhouse behind D’AIR is our professional aerial dance company, D’AIR Aerial Dance Theatre. Currently comprised of seven dancers, a technical director and stage manager, our goal is to maintain an intimate group of diverse artists who work together collaboratively to develop and produce original works of aerial dance theatre that is of highest artistic excellence. Over the past five years the company has produced one full length show annually in the Spring performed in our in-house theatre. D’AIR is known for producing intimate shows that ignite the imagination, are thought provoking, humorous, athletic and fun.
EDUCATION: D’AIR Community Arts
At the heart of D’AIR is our Teen Program providing a healthy after school alternative by offering free but student earned aerial dance classes and performance opportunities. To foster commitment and a sense of responsibility, students earn their own classes by assisting with the maintenance of the space, participating in fundraising activities, and acting as teachers and mentors to students in the youth classes or community outreach groups. Ultimately we hope to have our entire Community Arts Program led by our current and graduate teens. Currently we have 40 teens enrolled in our teen program, with 60-70 percent of those from low-income families. Our program is offered on a sliding scale fee.
A core component of the Teen Program is giving back to the community. D’AIR is able to reach a broader range of young and especially under-served audiences through our outreach program by offering special workshops, community performances, demonstrations, and/or residency programs to other non-profit community partners. We are able to extend our reach beyond our walls by using our portable rig for performances and demonstrations.
D’AIR offers fee-based aerial dance and movement arts classes to the community at large. Adult classes are all fee-based and include fitness, aerial dance technique and choreography classes. Approximately 50 % of the youth class slots are offered to the community at-large on a sliding scale while the remaining slots are reserved for our community partners.
